Grapefruit |
More commonly known to us as Chakotra or Mausambi,
grapefruit is one of the tastiest and healthiest subtropical citrus found in
the market. Historically, grapefruit came to us from the land of West Indies,
specifically Barbados.
Fun fact: Grapefruit is originally
anhybrid. It has been created by crossing a sweet orange and a pomelo.
Presently, the major producers of Grapefruit ate
China, United States of America (particularly in semi tropical states of the
south like California and Florida) and other semi tropical areas. India is also
one of the major producers of grapefruit. There are a few varieties in which
the flesh is pink, white or red. The skin is thicker than that of an orange and
they have as many as 50 or more seeds in them. Some of the main health benefits
of grapefruit as per Ananya Bhattacharya, a personal diet coach in Kolkata are:
· It is rich in Vitamin A, Lycopene and Carotene.
These help immensely in keeping the body healthy and fit and prevent a number
of diseases from occurring.
Fun Fact: Its health benefits are so immense that it is sometimes called
“The fruit of Paradise”
· According to the findings of Harvard Medical, the
glycaemic index of grapefruit is 25. Which shows that even diabetic patients
can have it as it does not affect the insulin or blood sugar level levels too
significantly.
· It is rich in Vitamin C, which has a rejuvenating effect
on the skin. Regular intake of grapefruit helps protect the skin against the
harsh sun, pollution and early wrinkling.
· Daily consumption of grapefruit definitely has its
benefits, but also one can apply it on the skin to get better glowing texture
and skin health.
